WINSLOW — A good Samaritan who tackled a man trying to hold up a South Jersey Wawa is being called a hero by township police.

Police said the man, whose identity was not disclosed, tackled Alexandra Ray after he ordered at gunpoint the young female employees at the Cross Keys Road store to get on the floor just before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Police Chief George Smith told 6 ABC Action News that the man was a hero for his actions.

Despite being pistol whipped by Ray, the man fought and wound up outside in the parking lot. When police arrived, the man had disarmed Ray and none of the employees were hurt.

Police said they later recovered the weapon and said it was not loaded.

The man was hospitalized for cuts on his face and bruises on his body.

Ray was hospitalized. Police say he will be charged with robbery, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.
