Police find NJ woman who stole teen’s dropped wallet at Walmart
RIVERDALE — The woman who is seen in surveillance video taking a wallet from a teen who inadvertently dropped it on the floor has been caught and charged by police.
Township police said Thursday that they met with the woman on Wednesday and that she returned the wallet with $125 cash inside.
Even though she was charged with a crime and criminal charges are a matter of public record, police declined to identify the North Jersey woman "due to the vast amount of social media attention."
The woman was charged with theft of property lost, a disorderly persons offense that will be heard in Municipal Court.
The wallet was returned to the girl, identified by CBS New York as Emily Moriarty. She was at the Morris County Walmart looking at DVDs for her recently widowed grandmother, according to the report, and was using her birthday money to buy the gift.
Walmart gave Moriarty a gift card, but the 15-year-old gave it to charity.
