NEWARK — A man authorities say tried to hire someone to kidnap and murder a woman he'd met through an online dating service has been sentenced to 210 months in prison.

Christopher Thieme, 36, of Sussex Count pleaded guilty this summer to attempted kidnapping and one count of murder-for-hire.

According to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman, he admitted that in late 2015 and early this year, he sought help from an associate in a plan to kidnap and ultimately murder the woman — but that associate went to law enforcement instead.

The associate introduced Thieme to an undercover FBI agent, posing as a hitman, Fishman said.

"Thieme explained to the undercover FBI agent that, once the victim was kidnapped, Thieme would empty the victim’s bank accounts and fraudulently sell off her home, the proceeds of which Thieme planned to use to pay for the kidnapping and murder," Fishman said in an announcement of the sentencing.

Thieme has also been sentenced to three years of supervised release and must pay restitution of $1,034.

"Because of my failings, I stand before you a broken man," NJ.com quoted Thieme telling a judge Monday.
