Boatloads of mermaids, pirates, sea witches and all manner of fanciful sea creatures crowded Asbury Park's boardwalk Saturday for the 2nd annual Asbury Park Promenade of Mermaids.

The event — both family- and LGBT-friendly — involved a costume contest. But mostly it was people in fun outfits enjoying a picturesque summer day.

Some of the merpeople stopped to let Bill Doyle take their picture. This being the shore town famous for its annual zombie walk, there also were some ghoulish creatures that washed up on the beach. Check out Bill's colorful gallery above.

The Promenade of Mermaids is just another reason why Asbury Park continues to be one of the Jersey Shore's most popular destinations.
