A youth counselor at Rutgers University has been arrested and charged with improperly touching a boy under the age of 16 on multiple occasions, authorities said.

Irving Acevedo, 42, of the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge was charged on Thursday with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to a joint announcement by Old Bridge Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Acevedo is in custody, waiting for bail to be set, they said.

The alleged victim was not one of the children who received counseling from Acevedo, a mental health specialist, authorities said.

It was not clear from the announcement how old the alleged victim was. In New Jersey, 16 is the age of consent in most situations, or 18 when the other party has some authority or control over the younger person.

They're asking anyone with information to call Detective Addie Spinola of the Old Bridge Police Department at (732) 721-5600, extension 3181, or Detective Donald Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3600.
