According to Acting Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, Robert Rawls was on duty and driving a city-owned vehicle on May 6 when he struck the children, two 14-year-old girls and a 6-year-old boy. The children sustained broken bones.

Rawls was issued summonses for the accident for careless driving and failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. In a statement Friday, the prosecutor's office said excessive speed was not involved, and there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs.

The prosecutor's office says the state Motor Vehicle Commission will review Rawls' driving history and qualification to hold a license.
