No cause of death has yet been determined in the case of an off-duty Sayreville police officer found dead Monday morning, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said around 1 p.m.

So far, authorities haven't released the officer's name or any information about his death, other than to say it appears he suffered one or more gunshot wounds. The officer was found dead outside a former movie theater — the Amboy Multiplex Cinemas, which closed about a decade ago.

Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Sayreville Chief John Zebrowski said the officer's body was found at approximately 7:15 a.m.

The results of an autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office were not immediately available, they said around 1 p.m.

Authorities have previously said the officer was found in his personal vehicle.

Throughout the morning, a group of investigators with the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office and uniformed police were gathered behind and next to a black Dodge with a shattered window where the officer’s body was discovered.

Reporters were being kept behind crime scene tape about 100 yards from the scene.

Detective Wayne Canastra of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office was conducting the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact him at 732-745-3809.
