NEWARK — A 10-year-old boy was killed early Saturday inside a home on the city's West Side by a gun shot by another child, according to police.

Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Thomas S. Fennelly said police found the wounded boy after being called about 1:25 a.m. to the third-floor apartment on 19th Street in the city's West Side.

On Sunday the incident was termed a "tragic accident" by Chief Quovella Spruill of the Prosecutor's Office but said the investigation is ongoing. Spruill said there was no evidence the shots were fired into the apartment.

ABC7 Eyewitness News reported the boy was visiting his father.
