NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's largest city has 41 new firefighters.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka swore in 41 recruits from the fire department's 44th class on Friday. All recruits completed 12 weeks of training at the fire academy that included physical training, classroom work and practical exercises including simulated rescues

Among the new firefighters is a married couple, Cesar and Veronica Gray.

The class also includes 17 African-Americans and 9 Latinos.

Fire Director James Stewart, Fire Chief John Centanni and Rep. Donald Payne Jr. attended the ceremony.
