PINE BEACH — A man trying to stop a car from rolling out of a parking lot was seriously injured when the vehicle struck him and came to rest on his chest on Wednesday.

The man was the passenger in a car that pulled into the 7-Eleven on Route 9 just before 11 p.m., according to Pine Beach police. The driver thought that he had put the vehicle into park and both of them got out, police said.

The car was actually in reverse and as the car began to roll toward the highway, the passenger ran to the back of the car to stop it, police said.

The passenger was knocked down by the vehicle, which came to a stop on him, police said. The driver got inside and drove the vehicle off the passenger, according to police.

The man was flown via medical helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition on Thursday afternoon.

Police did not release the names of the passenger or the driver.
