Fire erupts on Bayonne hospital roof; no injuries
BAYONNE (AP) — A fire erupted on the roof of Bayonne Medial Center on Friday night after a gas tank ignited. No injuries were reported and there was apparently no interior damage to the 278-bed hospital.
Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis tells the Jersey Journal that the acetylene tank was on the roof as part of work being done on the five-story building. It somehow caught fire and flames shot high into the night sky.
Nearby residents reported hearing a loud bang and seeing the colorful flames.
Patients on the fourth and fifth floors were transferred to the second and third floors as a precaution. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
