Swimming pools are no longer simple ovals or rectangles plopped in a backyard and encircled with a fence.

Homeowners are seeking resort-style backyards with beautiful patios and landscaping, outdoor kitchens, sun decks, spas and more. They view them as long-term investments in their homes and their families. Imagine the kids burning energy while staying cool on a hot summer day while the adults socialize in a cabana.

Now is the time to get started if you want to make the most of the 2019 season, so we turned to Seasonal World, NJ101.5’s official pool builder, for their best advice on building a dream backyard:

1) Start with a general look and design you like — and your budget. Seasonal World specializes in four types of pools (steel wall vinyl liner, concrete wall vinyl liner, fiberglass and gunite), but some pools have depth, size or other limitations. If you have a basic idea of what you want to accomplish, Seasonal World's experts can match you with the pool construction style that matches your backyard and budget.

2) Consider what your maintenance needs might be. You could use conventional chlorine systems, salt water pools or ultraviolet systems to sanitize your pool. Seasonal World also offers an exclusive in-floor cleaning system that allows the pool to clean itself. As you move through the design process, your designer can suggest other options for making both the long-term and short-term maintenance easier.

3) Similarly, think about long-term service needs and warranties. Not all pool builders have in-house warranty and service departments, but choosing a builder that does can make your life easier 2, 5 and 10 years down the road.

4) Think about the other amenities that will make your backyard feel like a vacation destination. You'll want to make sure your pool builder can handle all your construction needs, from plumbing to electrical to decking and beyond. Don't get so excited about the pool that you forget to discuss everything you want around it. Do you want to build it all at once or in phases?

5) Consider what materials and design styles will fit with the rest of your home. Pool design has been shifting toward geometric designs with very clean lines and away from the curvy lagoons that had been popular. Great pool builders also offer 3D design services so you (and the whole construction team) can see and communicate the entire vision.

For example, here's a concept design for a 55,000-gallon gunite pool with a spill-over spa, a sundeck, mosaic decking and built-in fire pit:
