The head of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority is resigning to run a Formula One race in the shadow of New York City.

Dennis Robinson announced Friday that he was leaving his job as president and chief executive of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority on Jan. 2 to become the chief operations officer of The Grand Prix of America, a venture that will bring Formula One racing to West New York and Weehawken in 2013.

Robinson has led the sports authority since December 2007, a period of significant restructuring of the authority's mission, business lines and payroll.

The sports authority operates IZOD Center, Meadowlands Racetrack, Monmouth Park Racetrack, oversees the Wildwoods Convention Center and provides major support services for MetLife Stadium and the American Dream Meadowlands project. Robinson served in senior management positions at the NJSEA from 1990-1997.

The Meadowlands will be the host site of the Super Bowl in 2014.
