🔴 A powerful Democrat is backing a Republican-introduced bill in NJ

🔴 The bill would stiffen penalties for politically motivated crimes

🔴 Both senators say everyone's rights to take part in democracy should be protected

A  New Jersey Republican lawmaker is getting support from a powerful Democrat in the Garden State regarding legislation that would classify politically motivated violence as a hate crime.

With the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week at a Utah college campus, Sen. Douglas Steinhardt, R-Warren, introduced the bill that would enhance penalties and mandatory minimum sentences for politically motivated crimes.

Bipartisan support in Trenton for tougher penalties

Now, he’s getting the backing from Sen. Brian Stack, D-Hudson. The two announced on Monday that they will partner to combat politically motivated violence by working together in a bipartisan way on this legislation.

Under the proposed law, criminal acts like assault, arson, terroristic threats, manslaughter, and murder, when politically motivated, would be classified as hate crimes and subject to enhanced penalties.

Lawmakers say democracy must be protected from violence

Stack said he’s proud to work with Steinhardt on this critical bill and will do everything he can to help move it through the legislative process.

“This bill protects people’s rights to participate in our democracy freely and without fear. By imposing tougher penalties, we are making it clear: if you use violence to punish, deter, or silence a victim from engaging in political expression or participation, there will be consequences. Enough is enough; this kind of behavior has no place in a free society,” Stack said.

Additionally, where such politically violent acts are committed against government employees, appointees, or officials, the bill may contemplate presumptions of criminal intent.

Steinhardt and Stack call for unity against extremism

Steinhardt emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in addressing the rising trend of politically driven violence.

“I’m proud to have Brian join me in this effort. Working together is the only way forward, and it sends a crucial message that this isn’t a partisan issue,” Steinhardt said.

Both men agreed that political violence hurts everyone, and it’s happening way too often. The time is to act now to deter such violence and hold offenders accountable for their actions.

The initiative would mark a significant step toward ensuring New Jersey remains a place where political discourse is protected.
