BERKELEY (Ocean) - An Ocean County man was killed while a deer hunting on Saturday morning.

Berkeley Township Police said Rich Pereira, 26, of  Barnegat was hunting off Locker Street with his father and two friends when one of the friends, a 41-year-old man from Forked River, accidentally fired his shotgun. Pereira's father immediately tried to help his son while 9-1-1 was called.

The area is behind the recently torn down Beachwood Shopping Center in an area known as Johnson's Pit.

A doctor from Beth Israel Hospital in Newark remotely declared Pereira dead whose body was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Police said the Ocean County Sheriff's Dept. took possession of the shotgun.

No charges have yet been filed in the incident.
