EDISON — A Jersey Shore motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Route 287 on Monday.

Ernest Soper III, 48, of Toms River, was ejected from his 2016 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy when it overturned near Exit 3 for Durham Avenue around 2:20 p.m., according to State Police Lt. Ted Schafer.

Soper struck a Chevrolet in front of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Schafer said several motorists stopped to help Sopar before police and EMS arrived. The crash remains under investigation.

The driver of the Chevy was not injured, according to Schafer.

The incident backed up traffic in both directions of Route 287 for several hours on Tuesday. A lane was blocked southbound, which caused backups to Route 78 while rubbernecking delays developed northbound passing the scene.
