Four rabid raccoon cases were reported in Camden County in the first quarter of 2022, the most of any New Jersey county in that span, with second-quarter numbers soon to be finalized.
According to the New Jersey Department of Health, the rabid groundhog is only the third of its kind to have been reported in the county dating back to January 1989.
One rabid raccoon was previously reported in Middlesex County within the first three months of the year, according to state Department of Health statistics, which also indicate just two rabid raccoons identified in the county for all of 2021.
The Burlington County Health Department said it was not aware of any humans being exposed to the rabid raccoon, but is concerned about stray or wild animals that may have had contact.
For the second straight day on Tuesday, the Camden County Health Department announced a raccoon had tested positive, Cherry Hill's second such occurrence in a six-day span.
