HAMILTON (Atlantic) — Police in two Atlantic County towns tried to recover a stolen SUV valued at $220,000 before it crashed head-on into a sedan, killing a longtime couple Saturday morning.

Robert Barr Jr., 54, and Alice Stilwell, 67, both of Egg Harbor Township, were killed when their Hyundai sedan was hit by a stolen 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon on Route 50 and Third Avenue in the Mays Landing section of Hamilton Township Saturday morning.

The sedan came to rest in front of the gas pumps at a Delta gas station.

An adult, Nayshaun Brown, 18, of Atlantic City, and three juveniles face charges of conspiracy to commit second-degree aggravated assault (bodily injury while joyriding), conspiracy to commit third-degree joyriding, conspiracy to commit second-degree eluding and conspiracy to commit second-degree theft by receiving a stolen motor vehicle.

Police tried to stop the stolen Mercedes hours before the crash

Court documents show Longport police tried to stop the Mercedes, which had Pennsylvania license plates, around 3:42 a.m. while it was driving west on the JFK Bridge.

When the owners of the SUV were contacted by police, they realized their vehicle had been stolen. An alert for the Mercedes was broadcast to all Atlantic County law enforcement.

The owner of the Mercedes told NBC Philadelphia the key fob had been left inside.

Hamilton police spotted the vehicle around 7:45 a.m. near Forsythia Court with a Land Rover, also with Pennsylvania plates.

Police tried to stop the Mercedes as both vehicles sped off but lost sight of them, according to court documents.

Just seven minutes later, at 7:52 a.m., the Mercedes hit the Hyundai.

The four occupants tried to flee on foot but were taken into custody.

According to the incident report, cash and marijuana were found inside the SUV after the crash. Brown also appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the report.

A GoFundMe campaign said the crash has left Barr and Stilwell's families in "deep grief."

The shock of how fast it happened has "made this painful time even harder to bear," according to organizer Nicole Wright.

Donations will go toward funeral costs and, if needed, lawyers' fees.

Stilwell was a hairdresser for 15 years at Hair We Are, a hair salon in Egg Harbor Township, according to the owner on her Facebook page. Barr was a bus driver for Egg Harbor Township.

"Together they were loved by so many throughout the community. Two great souls taken far too soon by unbelievable circumstances," the owner wrote.
