TOMS RIVER — The man killed Tuesday in a police shooting was identified Wednesday as township resident as Christopher Apostolos, 56.

Apostolos was shot and killed following an "altercation" with two police officers at the Silver Ridge Apartments on Edgewood Court.

Police had been dispatched about 12:30 p.m. to follow up "on a prior report of a person believed to be in need of professional mental health intervention services," the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday evening.

Other details about the shooting and what led up to it have not been released.

Apostolos appears to have been known to some police. His name appears in a 2014 police blotter in Lacey Township for a $2,500 arrest warrant held by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department. There was no record of criminal convictions against him in the state court's public database.

As in virtually all cases of police shootings in New Jersey, authorities did not release the names of the officers involved in Tuesday's incident. County prosecutors are charged with investigating shootings involving local police officers.
