But they say it's still not clear why Thomas Gordon was on the tracks when the accident occurred Saturday night just east of the Elberon train station in Long Branch.

The 26-year-old Toms River man was pronounced dead a short time later.

None of the roughly 75 passengers and crew members aboard the North Jersey Coast Line train were injured in the accident. The train had departed from Long Branch and was headed to Bay Head when Gordon was struck.

Train service in the area was temporarily suspended while the accident was investigated.
