Four people were hospitalized, including the driver of the truck for Miracle Chemical Co. of Farmingdale. Hoiberg said there were no road closures or evacuations.

Exposure to chlorine can irritate the nose, lungs and throat, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.  It can cause an asthma-like allergy, headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

The shopping plaza just off Route 1 south also includes a Lidl, McDonald's, Dollar Tree, Sally Beauty and Baba Shawarma and Bakery.
