The weather is turning colder. Skies are getting greyer. Trees are becoming bare. As winter and the end of the year rapidly approach, the Christmas season is almost here.
That means it is just about time to make your plans for the holidays. On top of decking the halls and shopping till you drop, you are probably looking for a special place to celebrate the season with those you love.
Well, I have the perfect New Jersey spot for you. Far from the North Pole, this holiday destination will have you traveling south to Exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway. Yes, it's that jewel of the Jersey Shore — Cape May!
From decorated Victorian homes to jolly trolley rides to live shows and festive holiday happenings every week, I dare you to name any other place in New Jersey that has more classic charm, more Christmas spirit, and more merry holiday WOWs.

Tours
Honestly, you could spend hours just walking or driving on a self-guided tour around Cape May, soaking in the brilliant Christmas lights amid the infamous "Painted Ladies" Victorian homes.
Official guided Christmas Candlelight House Tours are offered on three Saturdays in December — the 7th, 14th, and 21st.
The spectacular Emlen Phyllis Estate is featured on designated nights via an Evening Yuletide House Tour.
And if you fancy a stroll under the quaint glow of old-fashioned gas lanterns, you can join the Lamplighter Christmas Walking Tour on select evenings in December.
Trolleys
Cape May MAC (that is Museums + Arts + Culture) runs a series of trolley tours around the city year-round. And yes, they add an awesome assortment of special holiday trolleys to the schedule too.
Check out the Holiday Lights tour, Santa’s Trolley Ride, and All That Glitters (telling stories of the holiday social landscape of Cape May's Victorian Era). Or if you want to tap into the peninsula's spooky side, you might try the Spirited Cape May Trolley Ride.
Trees
Officially, this year's holiday festivities in Cape May run from November 22, 2024 to January 5, 2025. You should especially mark your calendar for two special Christmas tree lightings: Saturday, November 23, 2024 at the Physick Estate and Friday, December 6, 2024 in Wilbraham Park.
Shopping
You can find the perfect gift for everyone on your list In Cape May. The most popular shopping hotspot in town is Washington Street Mall. Featuring dozens of shops and eateries, you could easily spend an entire festive day shopping here.
Shows
Cape May Stage closes out the 2024 season with The Gift of the Magi: A modern adaptation of the O. Henry story throughout late November and December. Their website promises a "real holiday treat" featuring "love and sacrifice ... heart and humor."
East Lynne Theater Company hosts New York City cabaret star Lennie McKenzie and special guests to celebrate the season with a special revue of holiday favorites.
Finally, head back to the Emlen Physick Estate for 'Tis the Season: The Christmas Caper, an interactive "whodunnit" theater experience involving a family holiday party and a missing heirloom necklace in a real Victorian house/museum.
Stays
You might think that Cape May is "dead" outside of the prime summer season. But you would be "dead" wrong. The Christmas festivities are quite popular, and can make for a lively, lovely day trip. Or even better, a weekend staycation.
Cape May is especially known for its assortment of bed and breakfast accommodations.
Congress Hall is a true landmark, renowned as America's oldest seaside resort. It has been welcoming visitors since 1816.
Finally, the Inn of Cape May will host a special Breakfast with Santa event on Sunday, December 8th. Enjoy a breakfast buffet, while making sure Mr. Claus knows exactly what is on your list this year.

In addition to all the holiday offerings, Cape May has so much to explore. Even in wintertime.
The Cape May Lighthouse has been a beacon along Cape May Point since the 1800s. It still operates to this day. And you can climb the 199 steps to the top for outstanding views of the entire peninsula and beyond. Be aware operating hours are reduced during the off-season.
Another destination to check out is Cape May Winery & Vineyard, offering daily tastings, a tapas menu, special events, and beautiful views. (Their Lighthouse White is one of my faves!)
The fantastic Cape May County Park and Zoo is open year-round too. And admission is free! (Donations are highly recommended.)
