I’m not as skinny as I used to be - and if you’re over 40 you’re probably not either - but I am absolutely shocked at the rapidly increasing rate of extreme obesity in this state and across the nation!

Everywhere I go these days, covering stories for New Jersey 101.5 News, I’m seeing more and more men and woman who are not just a little overweight, but rather, gigantic! They’ve let themselves go completely, and they’ve become huge!

A certain percentage of these individuals may have a genetic disorder or some other medical condition, but I have a strong suspicion most of them are simply stuffing their faces morning, noon and night - wolfing down cakes, ice cream and other high calorie goodies like there’s no tomorrow – almost like they’re going to be executed in the morning, so what’s the difference anyway.

I understand many foods, especially deserts, are addictive, but come on people, get a grip! From personal experience, I know that being a sugaraholic is no fun – you feel tired and grouchy most of the time, until you get your next “fix”, and then you “crash” – and of course at the same time there are also very serious health concerns involved, so the madness has to stop!

It takes effort and commitment and it’s a lot of hard work, but I’m hoping this is the year that many among us decide to take on the battle of the bulge, and at least start to lose those extra pounds, instead of continuing to gain!
