ASBURY PARK — A suitcase floating in a a lake, noticed by people leaving the city's fireworks display on Monday night, had a dead pit bull stuffed inside.

Ross Licitra, the Monmouth County SPCA interim president, said Asbury Park Police got the suitcase out of Sunset Lake between Webb Street and Park Avenue around 10 p.m. and found the partially decomposed body of a brown-colored male pitbull inside with a few spots of white on him.

Police also found a button inside the suitcase that reads "I (heart) Howard University," Licitra said.

"We just did a necropsy on him and we can determine he was a fairly young dog, medium sized," Licitra said. The suitcase is described by police as a black, nylon Forecast suitcase with a handle that comes out of the top allowing it to be pulled by the user.

The SPCA is asking anyone with information about the suitcase to contact it at 732-542-0040 or the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office at 732-431-6400.
