I’ve quietly wondered for some time if I might have sleep apnea. Why am I only now looking into it?

I’m human. We don’t like admitting things. Also, until recently, I thought the only solution for this was a CPAP machine. The thought of trying to sleep with a device on my face and a tube blowing air into my throat is such a turn-off. I don’t think I could get used to it.

Then I met Dr. David Federici at Federici Dental. I learned that not only did their state-of-the-art office take care of any dental need you have, but they also help people with sleep apnea.

As a dental practice, they take care of everything in one office. No need to send you elsewhere if you end up needing oral surgery or even implants. They do it all under one roof with an exceptionally skilled staff.

I also learned Dr. Federici is among a small number of dentists nationwide to achieve Diplomate status with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.

He offers an alternative to CPAP. In layman’s terms, it’s a dental sleep appliance custom-made to be worn over your teeth at night, almost like a retainer. It gently holds your lower jaw forward to keep your tongue from blocking/obstructing the back of the airway. That can mean no more CPAP machine. The dental appliance is used for people with mild to moderate sleep apnea and those with severe sleep apnea who cannot use a CPAP.

I used to tell myself maybe I didn’t have sleep apnea because I snored even when I was thin. I learned from Dr. Federici that while being overweight could cause apnea, thin people can have it too. Sometimes it’s as simple as the anatomy of your throat. I also learned how serious it can be.

Sleep apnea can mean prolonged periods of not breathing while asleep, leaving you suddenly gasping for air. Sadly, sometimes you don’t start again. People have died from this. You can suffer sleep apnea-induced hypertension, stroke, and heart failure.

Now that got my attention, and I am finally looking into whether I have apnea. The staff at Federici Dental is making it so simple. After spending less than five minutes on the phone with them, they looked into my insurance and set me up with a sleep specialist’s office they partner with for an at-home sleep study.

The process so far has been incredibly easy. Next, I had a virtual meeting scheduled at a time convenient for me with Dr. Grewal. That appointment was very thorough yet so smooth it lasted only 11 minutes, beginning to end.

I’m now waiting for the equipment to be shipped to me for an at-home sleep test. The data will be collected and sent to them with a follow-up virtual meeting after it’s analyzed. Then, if I do have sleep apnea, Dr. Federici will go over my options and get me on the road to better sleep and better health.

This experience so far has been made so easy by their terrific staff and partners that I wanted to get word out and encourage you to seek answers if you feel you might have apnea.

Don’t feel funny about making the first move and contacting Dr. Federici. He’s treated thousands of people for sleep apnea, and guess what? He has it himself.

I’ll let you know what I find out once the tests are done. This I can tell you now: Whether it’s general dentistry, oral surgery, or sleep apnea treatment, you won’t find more understanding or better-skilled people than the folks at Federici Dental. Get started today at federicidental.com or by calling 609-597-1234.
