Democrat Jim McGreevey is spiritual counselor to as many as 40 women who are taking part in the Integrity House pilot program. The program aims to address the problems that keep inmates returning to jail such as drug dependence and unemployment.

The program has been shown to cut recidivism by more than half, from a rate of 53 percent for Hudson County prisoners who are released without treatment to 22 percent for women who have gone through it.

McGreevey famously announced he was a "gay American" in 2004 and resigned soon after because he had an affair with a man whom he put on the state payroll.
