Army investigates after paratrooper from NJ dies in barracks

The military is investigating the non-training-related death of U.S. Army Sgt. Matthew D. Joskowitz, a Hackensack native, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The 24-year-old infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, died about 9 p.m. Oct. 31 at his barracks, according to Lt. Col. Mike Burns in a statement to the Army Times.  Burns said he could not discuss the circumstances of his death due to the ongoing investigation.

“Sgt. Joskowitz represents the very best of our nation. He was revered by his fellow paratroopers, and was a superb non-commissioned officer. We are focusing on caring for his friends and family as they mourn this tragic loss," Lt. Col. Christopher Brawley, his battalion commander, said in a prepared statement.

Joskowitz joined the Army in 2014 and was stationed at Fort Bragg for the past five years.

"We sadly lost a fellow paratrooper Thursday in a non military related accident. Sergeant Matthew Joskowitz. Amazing leader, person and a brother," the WETSU Airbourne Community wrote on its Facebook page.

The Cliffside Park wrestling team said on Twitter that Joskowitz was one of the most accomplished wrestlers in its history. The team dedicated this season to his memory.

State Senate President Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester, said that his death was felt not only by his fellow paratroopers but his hometown of Hackensack and the entire state.

"This young man exemplified the very best in American tradition and values and the loss of such a bright and promising life is a true tragedy," Sweeney said.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
