Winds Topple Jesus Statue Atop Orange School

High winds toppled a statue of Jesus Christ off its base on a school roof in northern New Jersey.

Newark Archdiocese spokesman James Goodness says the statue stood at the St. John school in Orange for about 20 years. It came to rest at about a 90-degree angle, and workers took it down Wednesday afternoon.

The statue was a replacement for the school's original statue, which also was toppled during a storm.

The St. John school was closed in June because of declining enrollment. Goodness says the Orange Board of Education leases classroom space in the building, but no students were in danger.

Classes at the school were canceled Wednesday.
