The union representing cabbies in San Diego is upset that the airport authority there is using body odor as one criterion to evaluate the drivers. They say it’s discriminatory and dehumanizing to judge the drivers based on smell, and that the odor is just as likely to be coming from the back seat as from the front.

The union may be sensitive because the overwhelming majority of the drivers are foreign born, which is why they’re crying “discrimination”. I find it amusing because it puts the union in the position of advocating in favor of body odor; who wants to ride in a cab with a smelly driver? According to Fox News, New York has a broad requirement that taxi drivers be neat and clean with no smell check.
