WATCH: Manhole cover flies into the air in Elizabeth

A mobile phone video caught the exact moment an Elizabeth manhole lid flew into the air Wednesday morning, knocking out power and prompting evacuations.

According to Elizabeth officials, by mid-afternoon residents and businesses asked to evacuate had been told they could return. But power was expected to remain out for several hours in the immediate area of New Point Road and Sixth Street, officials said.

While streets in the area had been closed Wednesday, all had been reopened except the area between New Point Road and Sixth Street, where work continued.
