On Monday, two New Jersey state troopers found themselves in what is becoming a somewhat familiar scenario: they helped a woman deliver a baby girl on the shoulder of a major Garden State roadway.

The incident took place in the early morning hours on the Garden State Parkway. According to a post on the NJ State Police Facebook page, the expectant mother was being driven by her husband to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood at about 4:14 a.m. Right around the time the couple was traveling through Hillside, they realized she probably wasn't going to make it to the hospital in time to give birth.

The husband pulled onto the shoulder around milepost 143.2 and called 911. Minutes later, troopers Alex Muro and Arnaldo Mateo arrived and found that the mother-to-be was already in labor in the back of the vehicle.

In the dark and in close quarters with traffic speeding by, the troopers called upon their training to safely deliver the infant.

"At 4:26 a.m., Trooper Mateo was cradling a newborn baby girl. Both troopers assisted with cutting the umbilical cord before handing her over to mom," State Police said on Facebook. "Mom and baby were transported by ambulance to Valley Hospital where they were last reported as doing well."

This isn't the first time in recent months that New Jersey's law enforcement officers have helped deliver a baby. Last month, an off-duty New Jersey State Police officer answered the call for a woman going into labor along the Garden State Parkway — and delivered a healthy baby girl.

Sgt. Sean Boag was headed home on a Friday afternoon when he heard a call come in from an expectant Lakewood couple. He was close enough to respond and help with the delivery.

In November, Trooper Robert Ravotto, a certified EMT, helped deliver a baby alongside the NJ Turnpike for a mother who's water broke prior to her due date as she was heading to see her doctor for a check-up.
