You may think the United States would be near or at the top of any list that involved the most expensive countries to live in but surprisingly, they are not.

Out of the costliest countries to live in, the U.S. doesn't even make the top 20. As New Jerseyans are well aware, especially if you're a property owner, that the cost of living in the Garden State is anything but cheap.

The rankings are from a website called Movehub.  To keep this honest, the site does not take into account the cost of living for specific areas within a country, most notably for us, the cost of living in New Jersey.

Movehub calculated its data against a base of 100 which reflects the cost of living in New York City.

Here are the top 15 most expensive countries (as a whole) to live in:

1.  Switzerland  126.03

2.  Norway  118.59

3.  Venezuela  111.01

4.  Iceland  102.14

5.  Denmark  100.60

6.  Australia  99.32

7.  New Zealand  93.71

8.  Singapore  93.61

9.  Kuwait  92.97

10.  United Kingdom  92.19

11.  Ireland  92.09

12.  Luxembourg  91.78

13.  Finland  89.68

14.  France  88.37

15.  Belgium  87.22
