UPPER TOWNSHIP — The New Jersey State Police are investigating an accident that  occurred Tuesday morning in Upper Township.

According to New Jersey State Police, the girl was crossing Route 9 near the intersection of Ocean Avenue when she was hit by a car just after 7 a.m.

A school bus had been stopped on the northbound side of the road with its stop sign and flashing red lights in use, police said. At that time, a 17-year-old was driving his 1999 Toyota Corolla southbound when he struck the girl.

State Police have classified the girl's condition as "serious," and she was initially taken to Atlantic Care Regional Trauma Center. From there, she was taken to Cooper Medical Trauma Center in Camden for more extensive care.

The 17-year-old and his passenger, a 15-year-old girl, were not injured in the crash, which is being investigated by the New Jersey State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and Troop "A" Criminal investigation Office, police said.

There have been no summonses or charges filed as a result of the crash at this time.
