BRIDGETON — A 23-year-old city resident was shot and killed while fleeing from police Friday afternoon, the Cumberland County prosecutor said.

City police were investigating an incident around 4 p.m. in the area of South and Fremont avenues, a residential area, when the man fled the scene, according to Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae. An officer followed on foot.

At least one officer fired in the direction of the man, according to the prosecutor, who said a firearm was found in the area where the man's body lay.

Prosecutors did not say if the man had fired at police. He was identified Saturday afternoon as Darryl L. Fuqua, who also was identified by relatives and friends online as De Rose.

South Avenue resident Trevor Scarborough, 14, told the Press of Atlantic City he heard four gunshots.

State law requires prosecutors to investigate all shootings involving police in their jurisdictions. The State Police Crime Scene Unit is assisting.

Bridgeton police were involved in a shooting in 2014.

The shooting in December 2014 left Jerame Reid dead after he stepped out of his car during a traffic stop with his hands up. Police had told him to stay in the vehicle.

Dash cam video showed Officer Braheme Days removing a gun from the car and pulling his weapon. Days shouts for Reid to put his hands up and not move, but Reid steps out of the vehicle with his hands up.

Prosecutors said that Days fired seven shots and his partner, Officer Roger Worley, fired once. But only the shots fired by Days struck Reid. The shooting lasted approximately 2 seconds, and Reid was hit in the chest and left arm, prosecutors said.

A grand jury in Cumberland County declined to indict the officers last summer.

Webb-McRae asked anyone with information about Friday's shooting to call the prosecutor's office at 856-453-0486.
