A Canadian researcher says that paying kidney donors $10,000 would save money over the current system, even if donations go up as little as 5%, according to NBC News. I've often wondered why people can't sell something that is legally theirs; I realize the argument against is that it would unfairly target the poor who might then sell too many of their organs or be used as "organ farms" by the wealthy.

There is no dispute that we need more people to donate their organs but if you want to change people's behavior, the addition of money usually does the trick. A couple of other note from the NBC piece: 4500 Americans died waiting for a kidney transplant last year, and the number of kidney donors has been steadily dropping for the past few years. Also, 70% of Canadians surveyed felt some sort of compensation for organ donors was OK.
