DEPTFORD — A drive-by shooting in South Jersey early Saturday morning led to the closure of two major highways.

A car pulled up alongside a Ford Fusion driving south on the 42 Freeway near Creek Road in Runnemede around 2:32 a.m., fired several rounds into the Ford, which went off the road, according to State Police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams. The other car drove off.

Williams said the male victim, whose identity he did not disclose, was taken to Cooper Hospital, where he later died.

There is no description available of the car or the suspects, according to Williams, who asked anyone who witnessed the shooting to call the Bellmawr station at 856-933-0622.

The incident shut down two lanes of the highway, which were reopened around 7:45 a.m. between Creek Road and Route 55.

Route 295 was also closed at the exit for the southbound 42 Freeway creating a multi-mile backup before it was reopened around 7:30 a.m. Route 55 was not closed but there was no access from the 42 Freeway.
