LACEY — For the second time in a month, the staff at the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter is taking care of a dog found abandoned in the woods.

According to a post on the shelter's Facebook page, Hope was found in the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area, the same place where Mabel the chocolate lab was rescued  from mud up to her neck before her death.

"This park is a known dumping ground for unwanted pets, and Hope is the latest pet to be discarded in such a cruel manner," the shelter said.

Hope was also found with what the shelter called a "makeshift collar" with a heartbreaking message.

"My name is Hope... 5 years old, very friendly, housebroken, loves to hunt," the shelter said the collar said. "Why, Why, Why, someone thought it was a good idea to let Hope go in the woods is completely beyond our comprehension, but thankfully, Hope was found before she found herself in the same predicament that Mabel found herself in."

The shelter said Hope was "very shaken" when she came in, and is "certainly feeling the sadness and despair that goes along with such a cruel act, but she is an incredibly sweet dog that is so relieved to be safe and cared for." At the time she arrived at the shelter she was examined and found to have a potential eye condition in addition to being thin.

Popcorn Park is offering a $1,000 reward for information helping to find and arrest the person who abandoned Hope in the woods. They are asking anyone with information to call 609-693-1900 or email njhumane2@aol.com. The shelter also said anyone looking to help with Hope's recovery to send donations through the Res-Q Fund.
