HILLSBOROUGH — In an effort to further alleviate traffic on Route 206, the New Jersey Department of Transportation is proposing a bypass on the road that would take drivers around the heart of Hillsborough instead of going straight through.

A public meeting is scheduled to be held on Wednesday at Hillsborough's municipal building, where more information on the project, which stretches from Old Somerville Road to Mountain View Road, will be presented.

If constructed, the bypass would run to the east of the existing road in two contracts. The first contract would continue the part of the bypass already built between Amwell Road and Steinmetz Road. The new road would would be a divided highway with two lanes in each direction stretching from Old Somerville Road to Amwell Road.

The road would then be one lane in each direction with a grass median from Hillsborough Road to Mountain view Road. As part of the project bridges would be built built that will separate Hamilton Road and the CSX Railroad tracks. Intersections on the bypass with traffic lights would be put at Mountain View Road and in the area of Old Somerville Road. The project would also include a noise barrier in Old Somerville Road, and a jughandle ramp would be put at the intersection with Triangle Road.

Because of what the Department of Transportation called "significant congestion during the peak travel periods," this part of the roadway was designated as a Safe Corridor Area.

The information session will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 379 South Branch Road.

Questions about the project should be directed to Community Relations Manager Meredith Hammond who can be reached at meredith.hammond@dot.nj.gov, or at 609-530-4555.
