BELLEVILLE — When police responded to a single-car crash at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Mill Street early Thursday morning, the five men in the car were all taken to the hospital for treatment, including one suffering from a gunshot wound.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said the initial investigation shows the red Pontiac the men were traveling in had started in Newark and was followed into Belleville by another car. That is when the shooting and crash occurred, she said.

Murray said the man, who had been shot in the head, was alive and taken into surgery at a local hospital.
