NEWARK — A nurse walking to her car after work was stabbed in the stomach after a robbery attempt in a University Hospital parking lot on Sunday night.

Rutgers Police said the woman was attacked around 7:30 p.m. by a man who demanded money before stabbing her in the hospital's parking lot #1 located at 185 South Orange Avenue. Rutgers owns the lot, according to the school.

RLS Metro Breaking News said the nurse who is in her late 60s managed to get herself back into the hospital after the attack.. She was taken into surgery immediately, according to the report.

RUPD is reviewing security cameras as part of the investigative process.

Police said they do not have a description of the man and asked anyone who may have been in the area at the time to contact the RUPD Detective Bureau at (973) 972-6394

University Hospital is a principal teaching hospital of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, home to North Jersey's only Level 1 trauma center and a regional resource for specialized services and critical care.

It was the latest incident in a violent weekend in Newark. A shooting Thanksgiving night at the Cozy Corner bar, also on South Orange Avenue, left Terrance Harris, 46, of Newark dead.

Shuri Henry, 40, was shot as she walked out to her car with her nephew after 11 p.m. Thursday night. Supreme A. Allah Jr.,18, and a 14-year-old boy were charged with murder, while Antonio L. Torres, 20 faces charges of eluding.

Rutgers Police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office have not yet responded to messages about Sunday night's stabbing.
