I’m really not even sure how many people reading this have ever even heard a podcast. But for those of you who do listen to podcasts on a regular or a semi regular basis, you know that they have to be pretty compelling to keep you coming back for more.

That’s why the creepy podcasts are so popular. I would say the number one genre for popular podcast is creepiness. Some kind of blood, guts or gore translated into the spoken word seems to be very compelling to podcast listeners. But when you look at the most popular podcasts throughout the country, is it any wonder that New Jersey’s favorite is "Serial?" Here’s a list of what states are listening to what creepy podcasts.

For those of you who don’t know, "Serial" is a phenomenon. Wildly popular and incredibly listenable, is the story of Adnan Syed, who was tried and convicted in the murder of his high school sweetheart in Baltimore when both were in their teens. His guilt is questioned throughout the saga. It was so compelling, that I binge listened to every episode in about a day and a half.

When I started to analyze why we would be among the states who enjoyed the story of a brutal murder it kind of made sense. After all, we are a harried bunch. we are tough, jaded, and constantly stimulated here in this state and I guess we need to read about a murder mystery in order to feel better about our own lives. Because if you think about it, we are over-taxed, over regulated, over-burdened and over-populated but at least we weren’t strangled and dumped in the trunk of a car.

Could that be "Serial’s" allure?
