Need for speed: NJ man flees traffic stop at 165 mpg, cops say

NEW BALTIMORE, N.Y. - A New Jersey man who fled a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway hit speeds of 165 mph on his motorcycle, police said.

New York State Police Trooper David Howard said officers tried to stop Kevin W. O’Donnell, 20, of Wayne,  Saturday morning for speeding on his 2006 Suzuki motorcycle.

But "O'Donnell hit a U-turn and gunned it so fast they never pursued the vehicle," Howard said.

They later found him, however, at a gas station filling up just off Exit 21 south of Albany.

"One thing people forget is that you might be able to outrun the capabilities of our vehicles but you will never be able to outrun the radio," Howard said.

O'Donnell was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing a police officer, theft of services and several vehicle and traffic violations. He is being held in the Greene County Jail with bail set at $5,000. He will be back in court on Nov. 15.
