Light snow and ice possible in North Jersey on Sunday

A Winter Weather Advisory calls for slippery travel as New Jersey gets clipped by a powerful winter storm.

I've been on the fence about this storm system's wintry potential for New Jersey. But now I'm thinking we'll see at least a little bit of snow and ice late Saturday night through early Sunday morning, in North Jersey only.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the following counties, for the following times:
--Western Bergen, western Passaic, and Sussex counties from Midnight Sunday to Midnight Monday
--Eastern Bergen, Essex, Hudson, eastern Passaic, and Union counties from 2 a.m. to Noon Sunday
--Morris and Warren counties from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday
--Hunterdon and Somerset counties from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday

So, in general, we'll be watching the area along and north of Interstate 78. For all but far northern New Jersey, the icing concern only lasts through the morning hours. But, to be clear, there's really not much to see here - we'll be at the very southern edge of this storm system, and most temperatures will eventually bump well above freezing on Sunday.

While an inch or two of snow may accumulate in the advisory area, the bigger concern will be freezing rain leading to ice. As I so often say in the wintertime, it doesn't take much ice accretion at all to create a very slippery situation. Please promise to be extra careful walking and driving early Sunday, especially in North Jersey.

For the rest of the state, and for the rest of the day, we'll see periods of rain. Of course, just a few hours north on the NY State Thruway toward Albany, over a foot of snow is expected to fall.

Looking ahead to Monday, New Jersey is going to get blown away again! Wind gusts above 40 or even 50 mph will be possible across the state.
