No more applications are being accepted in Paramus to adopt the puppies found in a van parked behind the Just Pups store on Route 17, after 400 applications were received in just a few hours.

"Thank you for the overwhelming response! For those still interested, remember there are shelters with many cats and dogs in the area looking for forever home," Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera wrote on his Facebook page. The application process was posted late in the morning Thursday and by 4 p.m. had closed.

Carol Tyler, a senior animal control officer with Tyco Animal Control Services, told the Bergen Record that all but 27 puppies had already found a new homes with those who had cared for the puppies. Two of the puppies in the van died, according to Tyler.

Tyco Animal Control Services, which had kept the puppies after they were checked over by veterinarians, said its  received many requests to adopt the 67 puppies but until now could not release the puppies because they were considered to be part of a criminal investigation.

Tyco said that once the applications are processed those approved for adoption will be called to set up an appointment to see the puppies at the Town Complex.
