NEWARK — Happy Thanksgiving ... and happy birthday to a new baby girl!

City police and firefighters on Thanksgiving morning helped deliver a baby in an apartment.

Emergency responders from the police department and Newark Fire Engine 6 were dispatched 7:30 a.m. to a Hunterdon Street address on a report of a woman in labor.

By the time they arrived, however, it was too late to take her to a hospital.

After the birth, the mom and daughter were taken to a hospital. Both are doing fine, authorities said.

“The training our officers and firefighters receive not only saves lives, but in this instance, it helped them bring a new life into this world," Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement.

"This has to be a very special gift for the parents, having a baby delivered on a day dedicated to thanks.”

“On this Thanksgiving Day all Newark gives thanks for our police and Fire for all that they do for us throughout the year and especially today for helping bring this Thanksgiving baby into the world," Mayor Ras Baraka said.
