He may have won championships and titles like Most Valuable Player but Hall of Famer Yogi Berra is up for something even greater, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Fans are rallying to get at least 100,000 electronic signatures by Monday, June 8 in order to garner the necessary attention of the White House. If he receives the honor, Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra would join other star athletes like Ernie Banks, Stan Musial and Pat Summit who have previously been awarded America’s highest civilian award.

The reasons why Berra deserves the award are endless. According to the White House, generally The Presidential Medal of Freedom is, “presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” In Jersey alone, the Navy vet who served in WWII, is well known for his extensive charitable works. Berra was a Montclair native for decades and makes sure to always give back to the community that he called home for so long. After the unfortunate death of his wife of 65 years in 2014, their home was listed famously for $888,888 as a tribute to his uniform number. You can find the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center as well as the Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University in Upper Montclair.

The deadline to sign your electronic signature is running out, but as Yogi famously said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” To access the site please visit the official page here. As it stands, we need 62,888 more signatures by Monday, June 8th in order to receive consideration. Come on Jersey; let’s support one of our own!
