Spring Lake Heights Police are investigating the theft of about $1,000 from Independent Fire Company No. 1's annual Christmas tree sale.

"We are upset and devastated to announce that we have been the victim of a real life grinch," Independent Fire Company No. 1 posted on Facebook Saturday night.

The sale is held at the firehouse on Sixth Street. This is the third year the volunteer company has hosted the tree sale.

"Someone stole the register for the Christmas tree sales, containing approximately $1,000 from our Christmas tree fundraiser," the post said.

The fire company filed a report with the Police Department. The firefighters asked the community to help locate the thief.

"Be aware, be alert, and be on the lookout for a horrible person who is not below stealing from a volunteer community fundraiser," the Facebook post said.
