NEWARK — A driver was killed when their speeding car crashed into a building in Newark.

Essex County prosecutors say the crash occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday.

They say officers saw the vehicle speeding northbound on Frelinghuysen Avenue and turned on their emergency lights in a bid to stop the car. But they soon ended their efforts due to road and weather conditions.

The officers soon came upon the crash scene on Sherman Avenue. The driver was found unresponsive in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Authorities are working to identify the driver, who apparently was alone in the vehicle. Further details on the crash were not disclosed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
