A Boonton Township father is facing charges after letting his 13-year-old son drive a van.

Police said that the 55-year-old father let his son take the wheel of the van on May 15 while he was in the passenger's seat. The boy flipped the van over as he drove on Farber Hill Road but both got out of the van after breaking a back window according to police.

The father, whose identity was not disclosed in order to protect his son's identity, was charged with allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle, failure to wear seatbelt and using an unregistered vehicle.

Under New Jersey law, a person who drives but has never had a license faces a minimum $200 fine and will not be able to get a license for 180 days.
