ASBURY PARK — A car smashed through and into a home late Friday night at Prospect and Bangs Avenues, firefighters said.

The Asbury Park Fire Department found the car had struck into the side of house, below the sill plate and through the foundation, approximately 4 feet into building’s basement, the department said. The home is a 2.5 story frame unoccupied multiple dwelling, about 100 feet set back off Prospect Ave. and behind 1109 Bangs Ave. the fire department said.

Members secured the vehicle ignition and began to assess the supporting systems to be augmented, it said. Members also began placing temporary struts for reinforcement during the car's removal. Utilities secured the gas and electrical service, and the city's towing contractor removed the vehicle, the fire department said.

A spokesman for the Asbury Park Police Department told NJ.com the driver fled before authorities arrived.
